Ryan has been with GRL Engineers, Inc. since 2004. He is a Senior Engineer with a BS in Civil Engineering from Cleveland State University, and has achieved Expert level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test. After several years performing the entire range of services offered by GRL throughout the United States and in international offshore projects, Ryan is currently responsible for all GRL’s educational programs for foundation testing professionals. In that capacity he has lectured on numerous seminars, webinars and workshops on foundation testing and has co-authored papers on the subject. Ryan is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a registered professional engineer in Ohio, Kentucky, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana.

Camilo Alvarez, P.E.

Camilo has been a GRL Branch Manager and Project Engineer since 2003, and has worked for GRL since 2000. Some of the major projects he has been involved in include the UC Davis Medical Center ER pavilion project, the I-4 and I-95 highway expansions, the Buenaventura Port in Colombia, the International Port of Manzanillo in Panama, the Port of Corpus Christi and multiple oil platform installations in the Middle East. Camilo has a BS in Civil Engineering from University of the Andes in Bogota, Colombia, with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering, and a MS in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He is a registered professional engineer in the States of California, Colorado, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico and Washington. Camilo’s publications include “Extensive Test Pile and Production Pile Programs at the UC Davis Medical Center” and “Dynamic Pile Analysis Using CAPWAP and Multiple Sensors”. Matthew Becker, P.E.

Matthew Becker, P.E.

Matthew joined GRL in 2013, and is currently completing his Master of Civil Engineering degree in Geotechnical Engineering, from the University of Delaware. His B.S. in Civil Engineering is also from that school. Prior to joining GRL, Matthew gained practical experience in soils and material testing, geotechnical exploration and foundation design and inspection. In addition, he has participated in research projects involving structural and geotechnical instrumentation and co-taught the undergraduate soil mechanics laboratory course at the University of Delaware. Moreover, Matthew has presented research findings at various Geo-Institute sponsored events and is a member of ASCE and of the Geo-Institute, as well as Chi Epsilon. He is the recipient of a Delaware Valley Geo-Institute Student Scholarship, the E.C. Davis Scholarship and the University Transportation Center Graduate Fellowship. Matt is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Delaware.

Danny manages GRL’s Thermal Integrity Profiling projects around the country. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University with double majors in Business Administration and Construction Systems Management. Danny honed in his project management skills at the Cleveland Innerbelt Bridge Project, where he first observed GRL performing integrity testing services with TIP while working for Walsh Construction.

Marty Bixler, P.E.

Marty joined the staff of GRL in 1996. He has a BS and a MS in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He has performed dynamic testing and analysis in many US and international locations including offshore work at Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Venezuela, Angola, Mexico and Alaska. Marty has achieved Master level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test and on the Foundation QA High Strain Dynamic Testing Examination, and has co-authored papers on foundation testing. He is a registered professional engineer in multiple US States and Canadian provinces. Marty is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, of the Deep Foundations Institute and of the Pile Driving Contractors Association.

Christy Bugher, E.I., joined GRL Engineers in July 2019. Christy is a recent graduate of the University of Delaware where she received her Masters and Bachelors of Civil Engineering, with focusses on geotechnical engineering and sustainable infrastructure.
Christy conducted a Bridge Management co-op with the Delaware DOT where she conducted, reviewed and assisted with in-field inspections on bridges, dams and culverts statewide. She was also a Geotechnical Graduate Engineer with Pennoni Associates.

Diego joined the California office of GRL after graduating from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo with a BS in Civil Engineering. Having gained experience in geotechnical engineering while a student intern, Diego is now pursuing his interest in testing and analysis of deep foundations. He looks forward to using his fluency in Spanish when interacting with GRL’s Latin American clients.

William (Bill) Chambers, P.E., rejoined GRL Engineers in 2019 as Senior Engineer. He has 28 years of experience in this industry and is located in GRL Norther California office. Bill received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Queensland University of Technology in 1990. From 1990 through 2007, Bill worked for DJ Douglas and Partners, PTY (a geotechnical firm), as well as Wagstaff Piling Pty, and Frankipile Australia (both piling contractors). During that time period, Bill also worked for the GRL Cleveland office between October 2001 and December 2003. In 2008, Bill founded a dynamic pile testing firm, Ngamo Dynamics Pty, and was the firm’s managing director through January of 2016. Over the past 3 years, Bill has worked as a chief estimator, a project manager, a piling engineer, and a senior project engineer for various Australian firms. He is also a registered professional engineer in Queensland.

Travis Coleman, P.E.

Travis Coleman has been with GRL since 2005. He has performed dynamic testing and data analysis on foundation projects throughout the United States and offshore. Some of the major projects he has been involved in include the Zoo Interchange in Milwaukee, the MVP-3 and 4 transmission line project across Iowa, expansion of the Stickney Waste Water Treatment Plant, and offshore platform installations in Saudi Arabia and India. Prior to joining GRL Travis spent 3 years managing geotechnical and construction materials testing projects in the Midwest. He has a BS in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University and a MS in Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville. Travis has achieved Expert level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test. He is a registered professional engineer in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Paul joins the California office of GRL Engineers with over 16 years of
experience in the nuclear industry. Paul comes to GRL from France, where he was a district manager for the construction and maintenance of nuclear power plants. He has extended experience in the nuclear field and will be an invaluable resource for Gamma Gamma Logging. Paul received his M.S.M.E. from the University of Montpellier in 2009.

He brings to GRL work experience in site investigation and inspection, project management, and as a crew leader. Stephanie is a member of the Pennsylvania office of GRL Engineers. She graduated with her B.S.C.E. from Georgia Southern University in 2020. During her undergraduate, she focused her studies on deep foundations and effective pile installations. As an active student, Stephanie was a member of the International Ambassador’s Executive Team at Georgia Southern University, and was elected Vice President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (A.S.C.E.) Student Chapter in 2020.

Christian joined GRL in 2015, after graduating with a B.S in Civil Engineering from the The University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, TX. During his studies he became familiar with strain gage measurements. Christian now looks forward to developing experience in utilizing strain gages and accelerometers in dynamic testing, as well as in all other deep foundation testing and analysis services provided by GRL.

Patrick Hannigan, P.E. is the President of GRL Engineers, Inc. He has spent the vast majority of his 39 year engineering career focused on deep foundation design and testing. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He has published numerous technical papers and was the principal author for the 1996, 2006, and 2016 editions of the Federal Highway Administration manual “Design and Construction of Driven Pile Foundations”. He is a is a licensed professional engineer in 22 states and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Deep Foundations Institute, Pile Driving Contractors Association, and the Association of Drilled Shaft Contractors.

Lin obtained his Masters of Engineering, Civil Engineering at the University of Florida, where he focused in Geotechnical Engineering. Lin has been practicing high strain dynamic load tests (PDA testing), crosshole sonic logging (CSL), design services for structural analysis, as well as highway strategic development planning and engineering feasibility studies for the last several years. He is a member of the American Socieity of Civil Engineers since 2013.

Mohamad Hussein, P.E. is Executive Vice President of GRL and has managed its Florida office since 1987. In his 30+ years of association with the pioneers of foundation testing and analysis, he has worked on more than 1000 deep foundation projects in 35 States in the USA and 20 countries. He has consulted on more than 300 bridge projects of all sizes in the State of Florida and conducted state-of-the-art research on deep foundations in association with Departments of Transportation (DOTs) and Universities. He frequently organizes educational courses and seminars on deep foundations, including directing the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Continuing Education Course: Deep Foundations Design, Construction, and Quality Control. He also trains engineers, contractors, and the State DOTs on foundation testing and analysis, frequently co-edits conference proceedings and books and has more than 80 papers, articles, book chapters, and presentations on the subject. Mohamad is a member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, ASCE, National Society of Professional Engineers, Florida Engineering Society, Deep Foundations Institute, American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), Precast Concrete Institute, Pile Driving Contractors Association (PDCA), International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC) and others. He has chaired several technical committees of these organizations, most notably the Deep Foundations Committee of the ASCE’s Geo- Institute. Mohamad is the recipient of the 2010 Florida Geotechnical and Materials Engineering Council Award, and the 2011 PDCA Professional Engineer Award. Tom Hyatt, P.E.

Tom became part of the GRL staff in June of 2011, and now manages the GRL-GA office. He has performed high strain dynamic testing across the United States and in other countries, both onshore and on multiple offshore projects. He has also performed GRLWEAP driveability analysis for the offshore industry. Tom’s experience in non-destructive testing includes research as well as practice: he has analyzed low strain pile integrity testing and cross hole sonic logging data for clients around the world. Tom has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Cleveland State University (CSU), is an American Concrete Institute Grade 1 Concrete Field Testing Technician, a NRMCA Pervious Concrete Technician and has achieved Master level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis .Proficiency Test. Tom is a registered professional engineer in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia.

After a couple of years as a civil engineering intern, he joined GRL Florida, where he is pursuing his interest in geotechnical engineering and gaining experience in testing and analysis of deep foundations. Dennis Kiptoo

Dennis is a member of the Pennsylvania office of GRL Engineers. He received his undergraduate degree from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in 2010 and proceeded to obtain two Master’s degrees. The first M.S.C.E. he received was from the University of Cape Town in 2016 and the second M.S.C.E. he received from Virginia Tech in 2020. With a background in geotechnical engineering, Dennis focused his dissertation on the effects of dynamic and static load testing to geosynthetic reinforced pavements.

Jourdan Labonte joined GRL Engineers’ Texas office in January 2020. Jourdan obtained his Master of Engineering degree from the University of British Columbia in 2018 where he focused on geotechnical engineering.
After obtaining his M.Eng. degree, Jourdan worked for Thurber Engineering in Calgary where he provided geotechnical engineering analyses on energy and infrastructure projects. Jourdan received his BSCE degree from the University of Alberta in 2017

Anna has been with GRL since 2004, and performs high-strain and low-strain dynamic testing and analyses on deep foundations, as well as conducts cross-hole sonic logging. Anna has a BS in Civil Engineering and a MS in Civil Engineering both from University of Michigan. She is a member of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Anna is an Engineer in Training in Michigan. She has achieved Advanced level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test and on the Foundation QA High-Strain Dynamic Pile Testing (HSDPT) certification.

Van holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University. He has a 30+ year career as a geotechnical engineer, most recently at the helm of Wagner Komurka Geotechnical Group. Van is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers Geo-Institute’s Deep Foundations Committee, of the Deep Foundations Institute’s Driven Pile Committee and of the Technical Committee of the Pile Driving Contractors Association (PDCA). Van has authored multiple publications and is an instructor for the course “Driven Pile Foundations – Design and Construction” offered by the Federal Highway Administration National Highway Institute (FHWA/NHI). He received the University of Wisconsin–Platteville College of Engineering Mathematics and Science Alumni Chapter Outstanding Entrepreneur/Businessperson Award and two PDCA Awards, the Professional Engineer’s Service Award and the Presidential Award for Distinguished Service. Van is a registered Professional Engineer in the States of Florida, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. He has been granted the Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering (D.GE) certification from ASCE’s Academy of Geo-Professionals.

Christopher McCann started with GRL Central on January 1st 2020. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in 2007. His experience includes 9 years of heavy civil construction with PCL Civil Constructors in Tampa FL. Most recently he has been performing contract inspection work for FEMA inspecting roads and bridges damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Christopher will be located in the Texas office.

Hamid obtained his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Central Florida where he focussed on geotechnical and structural engineering. Michael has been with GRL since 1985 and has been the Branch Manager of the Ohio office of GRL since 1995. He has worked on projects on and off- shore in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Africa and the Persian Gulf. Michael has a BS in Civil Engineering from Cleveland State University and a MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Akron. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Ohio, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Kentucky and Michigan, has achieved Expert level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test and holds an “Expert Level” dynamic testing certification from Foundation QA. Michael is a frequent lecturer on foundation testing seminars, workshops and training events, has several published papers and is a member of ASCE, ADSC, and PDCA.

Brandon Phetteplace, P.E.

Brandon joined GRL in 2008, as a co-op, and became a Project Engineer upon his 2009 graduation from Case Western Reserve University with a BS in Civil Engineering. Brandon has a second BS, in Physics, from the State University of New York at Fredonia. He spent 6 years in the Midwest working for the Ohio branch office before opening the Texas branch office in 2015. He has performed deep foundation testing throughout the US and over 10 countries spanning from South America to Asia. He has achieved Expert Level on the PDI-PDCA Proficiency Test and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the States of Arkansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas.

Saphal joined the Illinois office of GRL Engineers in July of 2020. He is a graduate of Clemson University where he received his M.S.C.E. Saphal studied geotechnical engineering and as graduate assistant conducted research on analytical design and numerical analysis of pile foundation. He also has experience in performing site investigations and creating structural designs.

He is an experienced instructor and the author of technical papers on cyclic lateral loading of pile groups in clay. He has achieved Master level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test.

Abhishek Ray joined the GRL Florida Office in October of 2019. He is a recent graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Engineering. Prior to graduation, Abhishek held two co-op positions with Braun Intertec Inc. in Dickinson ND where he performed construction materials and laboratory testing. He was also an undergraduate research assistant his final semester at SDSM&T.

Seth has over 5 years of experience in consulting and innovative research projects in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. Seth has worked primarily in deep foundation design and conducted technical analyses focused on the area of pile dynamics.
Seth’s experience has included the design and implementation of drop weight dynamic load tests on drilled deep foundations, involving the structural analyses related to the testing device design, and pre-testing simulations and post-test interpretation of the dynamic measurements. He has evaluated subsurface engineering design parameters and designed shallow and deep foundations for large viaducts/bridges, off-shore piers, and high-rise structures globally. Seth has also worked on the calibration and application of Reliability Based Design procedures in the Load and Resistance Factor Design format for establishing the nominal resistance of deep driven foundations.
Seth holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of MA.

Brent joined GRL in 1999 as a research engineer. In addition to his R&D activities in high and low strain foundation testing, Brent has tested and analyzed the foundations of multiple bridges, stadiums, offshore oil platforms and other structures, and frequently trains new users of equipment manufactured by Pile Dynamics, Inc. Brent holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, and a MS and PhD in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University. Brent is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and of its Geo-Institute, and a past chair of the Geotechnical Committee of the Cleveland Section of ASCE, which recognized him with its President’s Award. He is the author of multiple peer reviewed papers and FHWA publications, having received the Transportation Research Board Best Paper Award in Soil Mechanics in 2010. Brent has achieved Expert level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test and is a licensed professional engineer in Alaska, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Wisconsin .

Joel joins GRL North Carolina with seven plus years of site design and structural engineering experience. He graduated from NC State University in May 2015 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. Since graduation, he has worked as a structural engineer with Tower Engineering Professionals of Charlotte, NC. Joel is looking forward to leveraging his field experience to further develop his deep foundation testing skills.

Scott Webster, P.E.

Scott has been with GRL since 1992 and is the Manager of GRL North Carolina and of Offshore Services. He was previously a senior project engineer with STS Consultants. While at GRL Scott has worked on numerous offshore jobs in the Arabian Gulf and other oil fields and has significant on shore expertise in dynamic load testing, pile integrity testing, cross hole sonic logging and on the analysis of driving hammer performance. Scott has a BS in Civil Engineering from The Citadel, The Military College of S.C., and a MS in Civil Engineering from the Michigan Technological University. He has achieved Advanced level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test.He is a Registered Professional Engineer in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland and Oklahoma. Scott is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He is the author of several published papers, among which is Case History: Foundation Evaluation for the Virginia Highway 288 Project, with Farouz, E. and Landers, P., published in the Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering.

Ben has been with GRL since 2003. Prior to that, he spent about a year as an engineering technician with BBC&M engineering. Ben has a BS in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He has achieved Master level on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Test and Advanced Level on the Foundation QA High-Strain Dynamic Pile Testing Certification. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Ohio Contractor’s Association. He has co-authored papers on foundation testing. Ben is a Registered Professional Engineer in the States of Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Idaho, New Mexico and Utah.

Gabriela joins the California office of GRL Engineers after completing a Dual Program in Civil Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles where she completed her Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees. Gabriela has exceptional experience in technical writing and NASA Direct STEM research in hydraulic simulation and climate variability. She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Rahul is a graduate of the University of Texas Arlington where he received his Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Rahul received his Bachelor of Technology degree in 2016 from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. After graduation, Rahul worked for Rao Engineering Enterprises as a geotechnical engineer for a year before enrolling in the geotechnical engineering Master’s program at UT-Arlington. Rahul held two co-op positions with HVJ Associates in Dallas TX where he performed site investigation and Geotechnical analysis. He was also a graduate research assistant at UT-Arlington.
